What to do right now if you’re locked out

Before you call anyone, ninety seconds of checking can occasionally save you a call-out entirely:

– Check every other door and window. Back doors, patio doors, garage side doors, ground-floor windows. It’s the obvious thing and people skip it when they’re stressed.
– Check with anyone who holds a spare. A neighbour, a partner at work, a family member fifteen minutes away. If a spare key can reach you faster than we can, use it.
– If your key is snapped in the lock, stop turning it. Pushing a broken key further in makes extraction harder and can turn a straightforward job into a full cylinder replacement.
– If the door is UPVC and the handle has gone floppy or is spinning, don’t force it. That’s usually a failed gearbox, and forcing it can jam the door shut with the hooks extended — a much bigger job.
– If you’re locked out with a child or pet inside, or something is on the hob, call 999 first. That’s a fire service job, and they’ll treat it as an emergency.

Lost your keys?

Lost keys are a different problem from a lockout, and they need a different response.

Getting you back in is the easy part. We’ll use non-destructive entry to regain access to the property, same as any lockout.

The question is what happens next. If your keys are genuinely lost rather than locked inside — dropped somewhere, taken with a bag, gone from a pocket — then someone may have them, and if anything on the keyring identifies your address, your existing lock is no longer secure.

Our advice in that situation is to change the lock rather than just get the door open. On a euro cylinder that’s usually a straightforward swap and we can do it on the same visit. On a mortice lock it depends on the lock type, and we’ll tell you on the doorstep.

If the keys have turned up somewhere you can retrieve them and nothing on them points to your address, a lock change may not be necessary. We’ll say so — we’d rather give you honest advice than sell you a lock you don’t need.

What happens when you call

No hold music, no call centre, no dispatcher in another county.

You speak to the locksmith who’s coming. You’ll describe the door and the problem, we’ll ask a couple of questions — is it UPVC or wooden, is the key snapped or lost, is the door currently locked or just shut — and we’ll give you two things before we hang up: an arrival time and a price.

The price we quote on the phone is the exact price you pay. We don’t quote low and revise on the doorstep. If we find something on arrival that genuinely changes the job — a cylinder that’s been drilled by someone else, a mechanism that’s already broken — we’ll tell you before work begins, and you can say no.

Then we drive to you. The van is stocked with the common cylinders, gearboxes, handles and British Standard locks, so most jobs are finished in one visit rather than “I’ll have to order the part.”

How long we’ll actually be

Response times vary by where you are. These are honest averages, not marketing numbers:

Nights and early mornings are usually faster than these figures, not slower — the roads are empty. The slow times are weekday rush hour and Friday evenings.

If we can’t get to you in a reasonable time, we’ll say so on the phone rather than take the job and leave you waiting. That’s rare, but it happens.

There’s no call-out fee. You pay for the job, not for the van arriving.

Emergency entry without damaging your door

Most lockouts are opened without damaging anything. Non-destructive lock entry — picking, bypassing, or manipulating the mechanism — is the default approach, and it works on the majority of domestic locks. That’s the whole skill of the job, and it’s what you’re paying a qualified locksmith for rather than someone with a drill.

Drilling is a last resort. It happens on some high security locks, on locks that have already been damaged, and on doors where the mechanism has failed rather than simply locked. When it’s necessary we’ll tell you before we do it, explain why, and tell you what the replacement will cost.

If someone turns up and reaches for a drill straight away without trying anything else, that’s a bad sign. Which brings us to the next bit.

How to tell a real local locksmith from a call centre

This matters most at night, when you’re tired and you’ll take the first number that answers.

A large proportion of “24 hour locksmith near me” results are national lead-generation companies. They answer the phone, take your details, and sell your job to whoever is nearest — often a subcontractor with no local knowledge, no fixed pricing, and no reason to ever see you again. The quoted price on the phone bears no relationship to the invoice on the doorstep.

Four questions that sort it out in thirty seconds:

1. “Where are you coming from?” Local experts name a town. A call centre says “we have someone in your area.”
2. “What’s the price, and is that the final price?” A local locksmith gives you a number. A call centre says “from £49” or “the engineer will assess on arrival.”
3. “Who am I speaking to?” You should be talking to the person who’s driving to you, not a dispatcher.
4. “Do you charge extra at night?” Ask it explicitly. Get the answer before they set off.

After a break-in — burglary repairs, day or night

A forced entry leaves a property insecure, and that can’t wait until morning. We prioritise these calls.

What we do on arrival: assess the damage to the door and frame, make the property secure — that may mean a temporary fix at 4am and a proper repair the following day — and replace any damaged locks. If the door itself has been forced off its alignment we can usually get it closing and locking again.

On insurance: most policies require British Standard locks on external doors, and a claim can be affected if the locks didn’t meet that standard. If yours didn’t, we’ll fit insurance approved locks as part of the repair so you’re covered going forward. We’ll also give you paperwork describing what was fitted, which insurers usually ask for.

British Standard locks and home security upgrades

Not every job is an emergency. A fair number of our calls are people who’ve had a scare — a break-in nearby, a lost key, a door that’s never quite felt solid — and want the locks brought up to standard.

British Standard locks (BS3621) are tested against drilling, picking and forced entry, and most UK insurers expect them on external doors. We fit BS3621 mortice locks, Yale locks and high security cylinders across wooden, metal and UPVC doors.

Anti-snap euro cylinders matter specifically on UPVC. Lock snapping is the most common method of forced entry on UPVC doors in the UK, and a standard cylinder offers very little resistance to it. An anti-snap cylinder is an inexpensive upgrade that removes the easiest way into your house.

A security assessment costs nothing. If we’re already at your property for something else, ask and we’ll walk round the external doors and tell you honestly what’s worth upgrading and what’s fine as it is. Plenty of the time the answer is “your locks are fine, don’t spend the money.”

Yes. The phone is answered around the clock. Night calls are a normal part of the job — most lockouts happen when people are coming home late or leaving early.

Do you charge more at night or on bank holidays?

Do I have to pay a call-out fee?

Can you get me in without breaking the lock?
In most cases, yes. Non-destructive entry is the default approach and works on the majority of domestic locks.

What if my key snapped off in the lock?
Don’t push it further in or keep turning. We can usually extract the broken piece and, if the cylinder is undamaged, you keep your existing lock.

I’ve lost my keys — do I need to change the lock?
If the keys are genuinely gone and anything on the keyring identifies your address, yes. If they’ve turned up or nothing points to your property, often not. We’ll give you an honest answer rather than an automatic upsell.

My UPVC handle has gone floppy and the door won’t lock. Is that urgent?
It’s a failed gearbox, and yes — it means your door can’t be secured. Call us. Don’t force the handle, because jamming it with the hooks out makes the job significantly harder.

Do my locks need to be British Standard?
Most insurance policies require BS3621 locks on external doors. It’s worth checking your policy. If yours don’t meet it, we can upgrade them.
