When you might need a lock change
A lock change isn’t only for emergencies. We’re called out for all of the following, day and night:
- Moving into a new home – you can’t know how many keys are in circulation from the previous owner, tenants, builders or estate agents.
- Lost or stolen keys – if a key has gone missing with anything identifying your address, changing the lock is the only way to be certain.
- After a break-in or attempted break-in – locks that have been forced or tampered with should be replaced, not just refitted.
- A relationship breakdown or a change in who has access – a fast, discreet way to secure your home.
- End of a tenancy – landlords and letting agents changing locks between tenants.
- A worn, stiff or faulty lock – keys that stick, turn roughly, or no longer feel secure.
- Upgrading for insurance or peace of mind – replacing an older, non-compliant lock with a higher-security model.

Locks we change
We change and replace all common types of domestic and commercial locks. If you’re not sure what’s on your door, send us a photo or describe it on the phone, and we’ll bring the right replacement.
Euro cylinder locks
The most common lock on uPVC and composite doors. Quick to change and easy to upgrade to anti-snap. More on euro cylinder locks →
uPVC multipoint mechanisms
The full locking strip running down a uPVC door. Where only the cylinder or gearbox has failed, a repair is often cheaper than a full change. uPVC door lock repair →
Mortice locks & deadlocks
Fitted into the edge of wooden doors. We replace worn or non-compliant mortice locks with British Standard (BS3621) deadlocks where your insurer requires them.
Nightlatches & rim locks (Yale-type)
The surface-mounted latch on many front doors. We replace standard nightlatches and fit British Standard versions for added security.
Anti-snap & high-security upgrades
If you’re changing a lock anyway, it’s the ideal moment to upgrade. Anti-snap lock replacement →
Our lock change process
We keep it simple and transparent from the first call:
- Tell us what’s happened. Moved house, lost keys, break-in or a faulty lock — a quick description on the phone lets us bring the right parts.
- We assess the door and lock. On arrival, we identify the lock type, door material and any insurance requirements, then talk you through your options.
- You get a clear price first. No call-out fee and no surprises — you approve the cost before any work begins.
- We change the lock. Most changes are done on the spot, leaving your door secure and your keys working smoothly.
- You’re left fully secure. We test the new lock, hand over your keys, and back the work with our guarantee.
Changing locks after moving house
Changing the locks should be near the top of your list when you move in. However trustworthy the previous occupants were, you have no way of knowing who else holds a key — past tenants, cleaners, tradespeople, neighbours or relatives. The simplest way to be certain you’re the only key holder is a fresh set of locks.
You don’t always need to replace every lock. In many cases, replacing the cylinders on your most-used exterior doors is enough to give you full control over who can get in, at a lower cost than a complete change. We’ll advise on the most cost-effective approach for your particular home.
Insurance and British Standard locks
Many home insurance policies require external doors to be fitted with locks that meet British Standard BS3621, and many uPVC doors to use anti-snap cylinders. If your locks don’t meet your policy’s requirements, a claim can be reduced or refused — so a lock change is also a chance to make sure you’re properly covered.
We fit insurance-compliant locks as standard and can tell you exactly what your policy is likely to need. Upgrade to insurance-approved locks →

Lock change FAQs
How much does it cost to change a lock?
It depends on the type of lock and whether you’re replacing like-for-like or upgrading to higher security. There’s never a call-out fee, and we always give you a clear price before starting, so you’ll know the full cost before any work begins. Call us with your door type for a quote.
How long does a lock change take?
Most straightforward changes — a euro cylinder, nightlatch or single mortice lock — take around 20 to 45 minutes. A full uPVC mechanism or multiple doors will take a little longer. We carry common locks in the van so the job is usually finished in one visit.
Do I need to change all the locks when I move house?
Not always. Changing the cylinders or locks on your main external doors is often enough to make sure you’re the only key holder, which is usually more cost-effective than a complete replacement. We’ll recommend the best approach for your home.
Can you change a lock if I’ve lost the key?
Yes. We can gain entry and change the lock even with no key present. See our emergency gain-entry service →
Will the new lock meet my insurance requirements?
We fit insurance-compliant locks as standard, including British Standard (BS3621) and anti-snap options, and can advise on exactly what your policy is likely to require.
Do you change locks for landlords?
Yes — we regularly change locks between tenancies for local landlords and letting agents. More on our landlord services →
